The Georgia Coast

My son Gray, with one of my bucks...

I was born in Savannah in 1955 and lived on the Georgia Coast until 1991. We hunted the pine forests and swamps for many years with a great deal of success. Pictures of this era are few and far between because we didn't see the need to carry a camera to record any success. We would saw off the horns and carry them in the back of the truck (most of the time until the season was over) and show them to friends.

That's my Dad and Gray maybe about 1985 on opening day. I was watching this buck, saying "Shoot Daddy, shoot Daddy" not knowing if had seen the buck yet when he took the 200 yard. shot.

I took this buck the next day. An average set of horns for the coast. This buck weighed 150 lbs.. live weight (which was above average) and was in full rut with his neck swollen almost to his eyes.

This is me and my Dad with opening day bucks. His big 8-pt. was watching when I shot my 6-pt. A pair of 6's were in front of me when I got to my stand. His buck and another 8-pt. were within his range when he arrived at his spot. I didn't know of anything but the 6's. After I shot, I walked out to see the buck and immediately returned to my stand. Pop said that his bucks watched me the whole time. He finally realized that they weren't going to give him a better shot and I apparently wasn't going to run them off, so seconds after I returned to my stand, he shot.

Now for an interesting statistic. If my memory serves me right, we both killed bucks on the opening weekend 7 years in a row with several times having killed bucks together on the opening sunrise at the stands mentioned above.
